Adil is a senior international banker, with 30+ years of experience in Australia, Kuwait, Malaysia, Pakistan, United Kingdom and Vietnam. Strengths include: strategy development and execution; managing balance sheet and profit & loss in complex socio-economic environments; leadership, people management and coaching/mentoring skills; strong and proven marketing and relationship management skills; communication, negotiation and conflict resolution skills; highly numerate with excellent analytical skills.
Adil’s last fulltime role was as CEO of Kuwait International Bank, Kuwait, where he led a very successful two-dimensional conversion of the bank from conventional to Islamic and from a limited license real estate bank to a full commercial bank. His achievements included: developing and executing a focused business strategy to grow niche real estate banking business into broad based retail and corporate banking business; implementing a business planning cycle to direct the majority of resources towards revenue earning activities and establishing a process to regularly measure the progress of all major initiatives; re-invigorating the leadership team through coaching/mentoring, offsite meetings, external training etc., and introducing balanced scorecard performance management which explicitly linked annual salary increment and bonus to performance. During his three year CEO tenure, KIB’s profits more than doubled.
Prior to joining KIB Adil was with the ANZ Bank for two decades in a range of senior roles in Australia, UK, Pakistan and Vietnam. Under his leadership ANZ Bank Vietnam was repeatedly recognised as the leading foreign bank (out of 28) and the leading retail bank in Vietnam. He was also Director and Head of ANZ Bank’s London based Global Islamic Finance Division, which was widely regarded as a leader amongst the Islamic windows of global conventional banks. As a senior member of ANZ Bank’s Melbourne based Group Strategy area, he played a key role in the AUD 2.3 billion sale of the Grindlays subsidiary to Standard Chartered Bank.
Presently he is a Board Director at HSBC Amanah Sdn Bhd and until recently was a Board Director at Ping Petroleum Ltd.
Adil is also a senior trainer for organisations such as Euromoney Learning Solutions, the UK based international training company. The training he delivers leverages on his strengths and expertise as enumerated above. In addition, he has advised international clients on strategic and financial matters for projects in Vietnam, Malaysia and Pakistan. Clients include oil & gas companies, private equity firms, banks and insurance companies.
To unwind, Adil maintains a regular gym regimen focusing on cardio, muscle and flexibility. He also enjoys solving Soduko puzzles. He and his wife have recently taken up ballroom dancing.
Adil is an Australian citizen, and holds an MBA in Finance & Accounting and a BA in Economics, both from Cornell University, USA. He has also attended the Insead Executive Management program.
