Michael Oh Hong Choon – Vistage Chair Profile

Michael_OhMICHAEL OH HONG CHOON, Co-Chairs the KEY-11 group of direct reports of CEOs and he also personally facilitates the unique VCE-19 Group comprising CEO members of international mix representing various European nationalities and Malaysians.

He has successfully held positions at CEO levels in London, Hong Kong and the Philippines. In addition, he has solid background and skills in corporate banking and investment banking as Chief Advisor at Malayan United Bank Berhad in Kuala Lumpur and NZI Securities (Australia) Limited in Sydney. Michael Oh thus brings along with him wide ranging global corporate experience and expertise into the Vistage Chair position.

During his career with the Malayan United Industries group, he was sent on special missions to London, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and Toronto to seek out new investment opportunities working closely with the Managing Directors of reputable investment banks such as Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Salomon Smith Barney, JP Morgan, Credit Suisse First Boston, UBS AG, NM Rothschild & Sons, Lazards Brothers and BNP Paribas.

After graduating with double honours in Economics and History at the University of Malaya in 1964, Michael Oh began a distinguished career with the Industrial Development Division, Ministry of Trade & Industry, as Assistant Controller and eventually as Divisional Director of the Malaysian Industrial Development Authority of the Government of Malaysia.

With regards the asset management industry, Michael Oh had the benefit of global experience and exposure in 1997-1998 through his Directorship in GAM Arbitrage Inc, a company of the Global Asset Management Limited in London which is currently owned by Julius Baer Bank AG, Switzerland. During this period, he also attended GAM Offshore Funds’ Board Meetings and GAM Fund Directors’ Investment Conferences in Edinburgh, Scotland on April 17, 1997 and in Berlin, Germany on April 23, 1998. During the period of 1997-1999, he also assisted the then CEO of BHF-BANK (Switzerland) AG, Switzerland as their Chief Advisor, Asia-Pacific in marketing the bank’s private banking services to the owners and CEOs of major corporations in the Philippines.

Michael Oh was formerly the Chief Advisor-Asia Pacific of MRI Worldwide Sdn Bhd. Management Recruitment International (MRI) is the world’s largest franchise executive search corporation based in the United States of America. He is currently a Chair with Vistage Malaysia, affiliate of Vistage International, the world’s leading CEO membership organization dedicated to increasing the effectiveness and enhancing the lives of Chief Executives & Business Owners. As a Vistage Chair since 2005, Michael Oh assists CEOs to become better leaders, make better decisions and achieve better results by being their trusted confidante, personal advisor, mentor, and executive coach and through implementing the Vistage Advantage process. Michael Oh has recently been appointed as an Ambassador of McKinney Rogers International Limited which is a British leading global business performance consultancy firm with offices around the world. Its impressive client list includes the LVMH Group, the Diageo Group, Pfizer Inc, Barclays Bank Plc, Bacardi Global, WAL-MART and Goldman Sachs to name just a few. Currently he sits on the Board of Directors of two Public Listed Companies namely Pan Malaysia Capital Berhad in Malaysia and Morningstar Resources Limited in Hong Kong. He also sits on the Audit Committee, Nomination Committee, and Remuneration Committee of these companies.

Apart from his considerable Malaysian and international corporate experience, Michael Oh is also much involved in community and social services. Michael Oh has served as a Director of the London Chinatown Lions Club, United Kingdom and has served as Director, International Service, Rotary Club of Pudu, Malaysia. On 18 September 1991, Michael Oh Hong Choon was made a Freeman of the City of London by the Lord Mayor and was duly admitted as a member of the Guild of Freemen of the City of London on 11 December 1991. He is currently the Second Vice-Chairman of the FIABCI Asia Pacific Regional Secretariat, the prestigious global real estate organization and he has also been admitted to the Professional Membership status of the Malaysian Association of Professional Speakers (MAPS). He also serves as a Member of the Asean Affairs Committee of the Associated Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia.
