Oei Kok Eong (KE) graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Singapore in 1977. He started his career in Jardine Parrish, Singapore as a project and maintenance engineer and then worked in Rothmans, PJ in manufacturing. He then spent 30+ years in the automotive component industry, initially as Operations Manager of a greenfield company, Kayaba (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, a joint-venture between Kayaba Corporation Japan & UMW Berhad, and subsequently as General Manager/Director responsible for RM240M turnover. KE next helmed the Autoliv group of companies, then a division of Hirotako Berhad, manufacturing seat belts, steering wheels & SRS.
In 2006, he was appointed Executive Director of APM Holdings Berhad, responsible for overseas operations till he retired in 2011. KE served in various positions in the Malaysian Automotive Component Manufacturers’ Association (MACPMA) & working/technical committees of SIRIM. He also initiated and headed the Toyota Suppliers’ Club’s Lean system activities for several years. KE was the founding Chair of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) group in Malaysia in 2000.
In 2011, he mentored APM Shock Absorbers to win the #1 Lean Model Company from more than 100 companies under the SME Corporation Lean Project. He was until recently a member of the General Technical Committee of Lloyds Register. He was also an Associate with the Malaysia Automotive Institute helping component manufacturers towards excellence through Lean activities and the Automotive Suppliers Excellence Programme (ASEP).
Presently, he sits as Independent Non-Executive Director of 3 main board companies of the KLSE. KE is married and has 5 children with 3 grandkids. He worships at the First Baptist Church and enjoys taichi, trekking, swimming, reading and movies.
