Also he had presented seminar papers in international symposium as well as local Iron & Steel and PetroChemical conferences.
Khye Thye started his career as an engineer in the first local integrated steel mill in Penang, gaining invaluable experience in the upstream steel industry. Thereafter, he was invited to run a new state-of-art greenfield iron-making plant in Malaysia. He was instrumental in resolving technical and legal issues associated with revamping the initially ailing plant with a new technology and together with the introduction of cost-effective solutions, was able to double the original planned plant capacity. Subsequently he was tasked to head the company’s sales and marketing division and thus is very familiar with the Asia Pacific steel markets. He has therefore gained invaluable international business experience during his tenure in the technical and marketing segments. In addition, in 1993, he took the lead in heading the ISO 9001 Quality Systems certification exercise for the company and the company was successfully awarded such recognition by SIRIM and BSI with zero NCR (non-conformance report).
In 1995, he decided to pursue his career as a freelance consultant cum trainer and after 3 years, he decided to join one of his clients in the petro-chemical industry. He was tasked with the challenge to change the mindset of the workforce so that they could adopt to a new working culture in order to face the adverse business environment changes. After a year exposure in the petrochemical industry, he was elected to lead the Asia-Pacific Vinyl Council for 2 years, and this council is part of the World Chlorine Council as well as Global Vinyl Council.
After 5 years exposure in the petrochemical industry, Khye Thye decided to go back to his first passion, providing consultancy and training work as his work with the petrochemical industry had almost finished. As an independent management consultant cum trainer, he has undertaken various assignments including project feasibility studies, productivity improvement and work culture change. Among his clients are Japanese, American & Korean multi-nationals in addition to local SMI companies. In several of the assignments, he even joined the companies for a short period to drive through the agreed changes for successful implementation.
