Tam Hung Wei (Cyril)

Cyril Tam, who had recently retired from the corporate world, still enjoys socialising with his extensive network of business associates. His prolific career spans 43 years, including freelance work, for various banking, commercial corporations and local SMEs.

He is equipped with an MBA in Strategic Marketing Degree (University of Hull) and has vast experience in the Banking industry after working for a local bank for 30 years. Here, he rose through the ranks and became the Commercial Banking Manager overseeing a host of branches in the west coast.

He has stints in academia as well. At a local college in Kota Kinabalu, he had conducted on a part-time basis the Diploma’s Marketing Programs for UBSC Australia and the UK Association of Business Executives Advance Diploma Program for two years.

Then, in February 2009 he joined an established Kuala Lumpur-based motor vehicles reseller and 4S centre. As its Area Manager — Credit Operations Sabah Region, he set up the Group’s HP Operations Hub in Kota Kinabalu. Subsequently, he had 5 branches in Sabah under his supervision. Notably, the Group’s HP Operations Hub in Kuching, Sarawak was set up six months after the successful Sabah hub launch.

In the same year, he was offered the role of Branch Head responsible for the overall operations of the Group’s Travel & Tours subsidiary in Sukau, Kinabatangan and Kota Kinabalu. This came while he was managing the Sabah HP Operations Hub. He relinquished the Branch Head position after a general manager from the Group’s Kuala Lumpur head office was transferred to Kota Kinabalu in August 2011 to lead the Travel & Tours division.

In December 2013, he left the Group after its lending/credit operations were centralised in Kuala Lumpur as part of a corporate restructuring.

In December 2014, Tam, together with a business associate, ventured into the Used-car business in Sandakan and chalked up brisk sales. His company, in the second year of operations, was even ranked the Top 5 Used Cars Dealers in Sandakan.

Upon reaching the age of 60, he settled down in Kota Kinabalu after disposing of his shares in the venture in March 2017. Since then, he has been active in the general insurance business and is also a freelance business consultant for several local SMEs.
