Derek Poon graduated with a Degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering from the University of Malaya, Malaysia and later in his career, he obtained an MBA from Henley Business School, UK. Derek has spent more than 25 years working for multinational companies in diverse industries, countries and job positions.

He started as an Engineer for functional and line management before becoming a CEO. He then transitioned into a career in education, as a lecturer for more than 10 years in the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Project Management (MPM) programmes.

In Industry, he has work experience in Technical Management, Marketing and Sales Management, Plant and Operations Management and General Management. He was also involved in start-ups, business turnaround and expansion, as well as right-sizing in tough economic conditions.

On projects, he developed and launched products, built and upgraded plants, helmed the project management office, designed and implemented IT projects, conducted training for project managers, partook in feasibility studies and participated in steering committees for projects exceeding US$200 million, among others.

In Education, he has supervised students at the Master’s level and was a lecturer and the Programme Lead for the MPM at HELP University. The MPM programme became the first in Southeast Asia to have secured accreditation from the Project Management Institute, USA – the premier organisation for Project Management Professionals.

Throughout his career, he has a deep passion for people development, having helped many of his team members to excel in their careers through his mentoring as well as formal and informal in-house and external development programmes. He strongly believes that by helping his team members to succeed, it will contribute to his own success.
