In 1984, at aged 22, KY joined PLANSCAPE where he started an eight-year career. The company specialised in designing and space planning for open-office-style furniture, allowing him to deeply understand operations involved in diverse industries and governmental agencies. As KY rose from entry-level job roles to senior management, it laid a strong foundation for his future ventures.
Entrepreneurship: Senheng – From Zero to Malaysia’s Largest Chain StoreIn 1989, KY co-founded Senheng Electric, which occupied only a half a shophouse, together with his two brothers. He officially joined the company in 1991. Despite having no retail expertise, the trio leveraged on relentless learning, innovation and breakthrough such as research conducted abroad, market analyses and process optimisation. This led Senheng to become Malaysia’s largest electronics chain with stores located at various parts of Malaysia.
Driving Transformation and Optimisation
- Brand Revitalisation: Built a comprehensive corporate identity (CI) system to elevate brand professionalism.
- Operational Excellence: Pioneered an in-house ERP system in 1994 to streamline management processes.
Supply Chain Innovation: Established a centralised warehousing and a supply chain management framework to boost efficiency.
- Retail Revolution: Launched a “Fixed-Price Policy” and a “Plus One” membership programme in 2000, solidifying a nationwide chain network and rapidly expanding membership.
With dedication, Senheng expanded its footprint across Malaysia, becoming a household name under its vision of “One spot purchase, nationwide services”.
Giving Back: Business Consulting and Empowerment
Despite stepping down from Senheng management in 2017, KY remained active in business. He provided strategic consulting to SMEs, shared publicly operational insights and maintained a deep knowledge in market trends.
Transformational Leadership: Steering Petsmore
Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, KY was appointed CEO at Petsmore, a leading pet retail chain. Here, he spearheaded organisational restructuring and business model transformation for sustainable growth. In 2024, he transitioned to Vistage as a CEO coach.
